In addition to the beaches there is also a handful of places to visit. Among them we highlight the Church of Nossa Senhora da Lapa, the Fortress of Nossa Senhora da Conceição and the emblematic Praça do Almada. And to close your getaway to Póvoa with a flourish, there’s nothing like going to a show, or just having a drink, at the iconic Casino da Póvoa.

Ovar is one of our favorite cities to visit near Porto and is far from (just) because of its famous Carnival. We love to walk around its historic center, go shopping at the Municipal Market, smear ourselves with Pão de Ló de Ovar (it has nothing to do with others) and visit the unique churches of the municipality, such as the Church of Cortegaça and the colorful Church of Santa Maria de Válega.

And the icing on the cake of a getaway to Ovar is to go through the spectacular Passadiços of the Barrinha de Esmoriz, eight kilometers of pure delight walking on the Lagoa de Paramos and taking a trip to the beaches of Esmoriz and Paramos.

Braga is one of the most beautiful cities in the north of Portugal and allows a simply magical getaway from Porto. For many, visiting Braga is, literally, “seeing Braga through a straw”. They just visit Bom Jesus do Monte and the Sanctuary of Nossa Senhora do Sameiro and that’s it. It is true that Braga is an excellent religious tourism destination, but there is so much more to discover.

Its historic center contains real gems, such as the Cathedral of Braga (the oldest diocese in Portugal), the Arco da Porta Nova, the Paço Episcopal Bracarense, the Jardim de Santa Bárbara, the Santa Cruz Church, the Fonte do Ídolo and the always lively Praça da República, home of the famous Arcade of Braga.

Outside the center there is also the fantastic Tibães Monastery and the Adaúfe River Beach, one of the most beautiful river beaches in Portugal. With so much to see and do, this is one of those tours near Porto that you will want to repeat.

And, of course, do not leave Braga without tasting its delicious gastronomy, of which we highlight the Codfish in the Braga style, the Rojões à Minhota, the famous Frying Pans, the Francesinhas à Moda de Braga and the Tíbia, Biscaínho and Sameirinho sweets.
